Project Details
This case simulation was designed in collaboration with Richmond county schools in Augusta, GA. This study is designed to provide high school teachers with the tools to teach bioinformatics and make the content approachable to high school students. The case evaluates the BRCA1 gene through genetic testing and bioinformatics. The focus is a young high school student, Hannah, whose mother and older sister have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and the family is curious about their genetic makeup. Students are able to walk through multiple sequence alignment (MSA) and phylogeny construction. Data was synthetically generated and an MSA was performed The case study is implemented in Python and is available on GitHub. It is also available as a Jupyter notebook on Google Colab.
